Template Level 7

Status Update Template

A structured template for keeping clients informed about project progress, blockers, and what you need from them.

Section 1
Project Summary

Start with a one-paragraph overview of where things stand. Think of this as the executive summary. A busy client should be able to read just this section and know whether the project is on track, behind, or ahead of schedule.

Section 2
Completed This Period

List everything you finished since the last update. Be specific. Use bullet points. Include dates where relevant. This is your proof of work and it reminds the client that progress is happening even when they do not see it day to day.

Section 3
In Progress

What are you actively working on right now? List current tasks and their status (percentage complete, stage, or expected completion date). This gives the client visibility without them needing to ask.

Section 4
Upcoming

What is next on the schedule? Give the client a preview of the next 1 to 2 weeks. This builds anticipation and helps them prepare for anything they will need to review or approve.

Section 5
Blockers and Risks

Be honest about anything that could slow the project down or cause problems. Clients respect transparency. If nothing is blocked, say so. If you are waiting on something from the client, name it here with a clear deadline.

Section 6
Action Items Needed from Client

End with a clear list of what you need from the client and by when. Make it impossible to miss. Bold it, number it, and give deadlines. Clients are busy. Make the ask obvious.
